EPOS ERIC has published its first Gender-Inclusive Language Guidelines, marking a key step in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion across the European Plate Observing System’s (EPOS) scientific and organisational communications. The document, coordinated by Carmela Freda and authored by Federica Tanlongo and Karl Stuebe, provides clear and practical guidance to promote gender-sensitive and inclusive communication within the EPOS community and beyond.
The guidelines recognise that language is not neutral—it shapes how we think, act, and interact. By highlighting how written, spoken, and visual communication can unintentionally reinforce stereotypes, the document encourages conscious use of language as a tool for cultural change. It offers concrete examples, from the use of gender-neutral terms (“chair” instead of “chairman”) to inclusive pronouns (“they/them”) and empowering phrasing that avoids bias and diminutive expressions. The aim is to ensure that every member of the research community feels represented and respected in all forms of communication
Beyond grammar and vocabulary, the guidelines take a holistic view of inclusion. They address issues of gender identity and sexual orientation, visual representation, and event organisation, offering checklists and examples for fostering equitable participation in scientific and public activities. Practical advice is provided for creating diverse speaker line-ups, choosing inclusive imagery, and avoiding stereotypes in visuals and texts alike. This comprehensive approach makes the document an essential resource for both internal teams and external collaborators.
By adopting these guidelines, EPOS reaffirms its commitment to building an inclusive research environment where communication reflects the values of respect, diversity, and equality. The document is publicly available and can be cited as:
