EPOS ON builds on the existing EPOS Research Infrastructure and its operational framework.

The project consolidates results and activities across multiple work areas and translates them into concrete actions supporting EPOS governance, services and long-term development.

It also establishes structured processes for monitoring progress and aligning project outcomes with strategic priorities, ensuring transparency and continuous improvement over time.

For over more than two decades, EPOS has progressed through a series of strategic phases:

Design Phase (2000–2010)

Development of the scientific vision and strategic foundations of EPOS.

Preparatory Phase (2010–2014)

Definition of the EPOS architecture, governance and legal framework.

Implementation Phase (2014–2019)

Development of the technical infrastructure, consolidation of the EPOS federated architecture, and establishment of EPOS ERIC in 2018.

Pre-Operational Phase (2020–2022)

Testing and consolidation of services, governance and sustainability mechanisms.

Operational Phase (from 2023)

Launch of EPOS operations and open access to multidisciplinary data, products and services.

EPOS ON (2024–2027)

Supporting the implementation of the EPOS Science Programme through enhanced services, stronger user engagement, international cooperation, innovation, and strategic actions contributing to the optimisation, evolution and long-term sustainability of EPOS.

The EPOS Science Programme 2024–2028, defines the scientific priorities and strategic directions for the infrastructure's development.
