TCS Tsunami Endorsed by the UN Ocean Decade 2021–2030

The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021–2030, a global initiative for “The science we need for the ocean we want,” has endorsed EPOS’ Thematic Core Service (TCS) Tsunami as part of its Ocean Decade Tsunami Programme.

The European Plate Observing System (EPOS), the pan-European Research Infrastructure for solid Earth science, hosts ten different Thematic Core Services (TCS). These specialized thematic communities (e.g., seismology, tsunami, volcanology, anthropogenic hazards, etc.) organize their data, tools, and services to address specific scientific challenges while ensuring FAIR and responsible data management.

TCS Tsunami is the newest of EPOS’ ten communities, having completed its inclusion process at the beginning of 2024. The UN Ocean Decade's recognition marks an important milestone in positioning it among global tsunami initiatives.

“This endorsement highlights the alignment of EPOS TCS Tsunami with the vision and mission of the Ocean Decade and the commitment of the Tsunami Consortium to global ocean sustainability through advanced research and technology development,” says Andrey Babeyko, Coordinator of TCS Tsunami. “Through this endorsement and future work under the scope of the UN Ocean Decade, we are enthusiastic about the wider societal impact the EPOS TCS Tsunami services will have for coastal communities in Europe and worldwide.”

Key Focus Areas Under Challenge 6 of the Ocean Decade Programme:

  • Enhancing resilience to ocean and coastal hazards through early warning systems (EWS) and adaptation strategies.
  • Developing open-access information systems for risk assessment.
  • Utilizing multidisciplinary approaches (e.g., Geophysics, Data Science, AI, Digital Twins).

With great enthusiasm from this endorsement, TCS Tsunami aims to enhance the impact of its scientific expertise through the data-rich EPOS Platform. The community looks forward to welcoming future researchers aligned with the UN Ocean Decade Initiative, encouraging them to leverage EPOS' high-quality data and to contribute their discoveries to the mission of advancing ocean conservation and understanding. This synergy will inspire more marine researchers to get involved, ultimately leading to a safer, more informed, and better-prepared global ocean community in the face of tsunamis and other sea-related threats.
