Data services (Virtual Access)

The TCS Multi Scale Laboratories brings forward data products in the form of published experimental research data. 

The chosen strategy has been structured in two stages:

  • During the first two years of EPOS IP the Task Leaders institutions (UU, GFZ, RM3 and INGV) have been working on the design and implementation of the TCS IT platform;
  • Once the platform is developed All TCS partner and interested data providers can populate the platform with (meta)data (starting May 2017).

The TCS Multi-scale laboratories will provide all the necessary components for laboratory data publication.

Multi-scale laboratories data services

The definition of a suitable e-infrastructure architecture is essential to guarantee that data from multi-scale laboratories are discoverable, accessible and usable.

The IT infrastructure for the TCS Multi-scale laboratories (Figure 1) includes different scenarios for participation, referring to the different maturity of the laboratories with respect to IT infrastructures.Most laboratories do not have, at the moment, data services and IT infrastructures (no repository or Multi-scale labs compliant metadata) and will act as data providers (orange boxes). Data provision to EPOS will rely on few TCS services, hosted at the four Task Leaders’ institutions (green boxes).

  • The TCS catalog functionalities are i) Expose all TCS metadata to the ICS; ii) Retrieve and store metadata and copies from metadata originallystored in other repositories; iii) Harvesting metadata related to analogue modelling, rock physics, paleomagnetism and analytical laboratories from the TCS; iv) Search facilities for refined discovery.
  • GFZ Data Repository rely on the GFZ data publication service, including DOI minting, sustainable storage, and metadata editor (allows data providers to tag datasets related to analogue modelling, rock physics, paleomagnetism and analytical data). The GFZ Data Repository exposes metadata of data sets published at GFZ to TCS catalog.
  • The UU Data Repository service concerns a sustainable storage system (built on iRods) which 1) Applies to the TCS metadata schema; 2) Makes use of the GFZ metadata editor (in order to provide a homogeneous way of metadata publishing within the whole TCS); Separate customizable metadata scenarios are available; 3) Allows data access (via forms or WEBDAV) for assigned project partners; 4) Allows external access for data package retrieval via landing pages with full metadata; 5) Published data packages will be available via a DOI that points in a sustainable manner into the UU domains.

A solution for every lab

The TCS infrastructure provide 3 scenarios for laboratories to provide their data:

  • Lab type A: through the usage of TCS-wide repositories with facilities for assigning DOI’s and adding TCS compliant metadata
  • Lab type B: through the usage of a local repository that can handle TCS compliant metadata
  • Lab type C: through the usage of a general repository for data storage and the TCS metadata editor for the generation of compliant metadata. Engaging labs have the possibility to grow from f.i. a localized facility towards a TCS-service

Data products related to Analogue models of geologic processes inlcude:

  • Analogue models of tectonic processes from the plate to the reservoir scale, relevant to the understanding of Earth dynamics, geo-hazards and geo-energy (e.g., images, movies, digital elevation models) 
  • Properties data on analogue modelling materials
  • Software tools for analysis and visualization

 Experimental data on rock physics laboratories inlcude:

  • Rock and fault properties of key importance for forecasting natural and induced subsidence and seismicity 
  • Rock and fault properties relevant for modelling the containment capacity of rock systems for CO2, energy sources and wastes
  • Crustal and upper mantle rheology data as needed for modelling sedimentary basin formation and crustal stress distribution
  • Data on composition, porosity, permeability and frackability of reservoir rocks for unconventional resources and geothermal energy
  • Volcanic ashes from explosive eruptions of interest to the aviation industry, meteorological and governmental institutes
  • Magmas in the context of eruption and lava-flow hazard evaluation

Paleomagnetic and magnetic data include:

  • Directional data
  • Magnetostratigraphic data
  • Magnetic susceptibility data
  • Paleointensity data

Analytical data on rock properties include:

  • Major and trace elements composition
  • Isotope geochemistry
  • Geochronology
  • Mineral composition
