The outcome of the EPOS-IP WP11 is the implementation of the VO-TCS, by defining a clear technical, governance, financial and legal architecture fully embedded in the EPOS Delivery Framework. The overarching aim of the VO-TCS is to provide long-term sustainable access to data, products and services provided by the European Volcano Observatories (VOs) and the Volcano Research Institutions (VRIs). At the end of EPOS-IP four legal entities are going to constitute the Consortium (INGV, IMO, CNRS and CSIC). However, the Consortium is open for new members and other institutions are working to joint in the next future, e.g. HSGME and UAc).

Considering that the Volcanology is multidisciplinary in nature, users will access to the multidisciplinary services through a proper Gateway that is under implementation thanks to the synergy of the EPOS-IP and EUROVOLC projects. The services provide:

  • Volcanic Seismic and geodetic data and products (e.g., seismic, accelerometric or acoustic waveforms, earthquake parameters, raw GNSS or tilt data, etc.);
  • Geological and Volcanological Data Products (e.g., volcanic or VONA reports, volcanological maps, etc.);
  • Petrological, Geochemical and Environmental Data and Products (e.g., geochemical, hydrological, or meteorological data, etc.);
  • Remote sensing Data and Products (e.g., satellite-based or ground-based high-level products specifically dedicated to volcano monitoring, by using optical, ultraviolet, thermal and radar bands to measure ground deformations – SAR interferometry - or volcanic plumes – SO2 or ash emission);
  • Volcanic Hazard products (e.g., hazard maps, scenario-based maps for different kinds of threatening phenomena, scientific tools for quantifying and visualising hazards, etc.);
  • Tools for Modelling and computational volcanology (e.g., the open source software repository for petrological to geophysical modelling);
  • Trans-National Access to facilities and resources for basic and applied science.

The intrinsic multidisciplinary of the volcanology implies a tight interaction with the other TCSs. The interaction sketched in Figure 1, consists in the harmonization of the standards of the data, products and services in common with the VO-TCS. In some cases, the data and products are provided by using the services of other TCSs (e.g., the seismic waveforms). 

The VO-TCS outcomes support the implementation of a framework of seamless access to the volcanological infrastructures, thanks to:

  • The definition of a common glossary, metadata structure and interoperable services to access to data, products and software for the volcanological community
  • The design and implementation of a first European volcanic portal (Gateway) [in synergy with the EUROVOLC project]
  • The design and implementation of a service to allow the physical and remote access to the European volcanological infrastructure (Transnational Access; TNA) [in synergy with the EUROVOLC project].

The VO-TCS fosters the building of an European volcanological community, in a global framework, thanks to:

  • The definition of shared strategies and governance structures for strengthen the community
  • The assessment of a shared Data Policy and strategy to manage the data in a FAIR environment (Data Management Plan).
  • The design and implementation specific project to network the community [the EUROVOLC project]
  • The provision of high-quality data and services and an easy access to the volcanological RIs, which in turn increases the knowledge of the volcanological processes and is a precondition for cross-domain researches.

Altogether, these points make the volcanic knowledge / the volcanological community more effective and pervasive in the society [e.g., Civil Protections needs; Citizen Science initiatives]. In the end, VO-TCS implemented: 29 DDSSs and 41 Services (including 3 services under implementation of  HSGME). Noteworthy, the EC EUROVOLC project plans to add 14 new services in DDSSs already in the VO-TCS and to implement 7 new DDSSs.

The VO-TCS is thought to easily put in the hands of the scientific stakeholders (e.g. academy, students or researchers) validated data, products or services for their volcanological researches. The services will improve the understanding of the volcanological processes of the European volcanoes and their effects for the society. Considering the very wide spectrum of the phenomena and geodynamic features of the volcanoes in Europe (both in the continent and the overseas territories), the studies based on the VO-TCS will have a global impact to the volcanological science. The studies of the processes occurring under the surface, e.g. the intrusions or the evolution of the magmatic bodies, will benefit of the availability of geophysical, geochemical and volcanological data and products as well as the possibility to use advanced modelling tools or organize fieldworks and experiments on the main European volcanic areas and laboratories. The surface or post-eruptive processes studies, e.g. those on the pyroclastic or lava flow emplacements or the volcanic plume dynamics, can be eased by accessing to the data or products (e.g., volcanic maps, volcanic reports, rock samples, etc.), facilities for fieldworks or software tools. Researchers interested in volcanic hazard assessment will benefit from the availability of tools estimate the hazard or results of about the hazard assessment in European active volcanic areas.

A part from the services mainly focused to the scientific use, some products are addressed also to no-scientific stakeholders as, for instance, the Disaster Reduction Mangers or the general public. This is the case of the volcanic report or some volcanic map.
