WG6. Analytical and experimental laboratories

WG6 represents a network of experimental and analytical laboratories creating a single, but geographically distributed, infrastructure for rock and mineral properties and tectonic modeling. The group is coordinated by one Chair and six co-Chairs, representing the main research activities of the group: 1) rock physics, including palaeomagnetism, 2) analytical and experimental petrology and volcanology, and 3) tectonic modeling.

Our short-term goals are to review and create a database of operational laboratory facilities in the community and to appoint representatives from each of the main partner countries.

Our intermediate goals are to create an ITN within each of the three research activities and to have EPOS related sessions for these research activities at international meetings (e.g. EGU).

Our long-term goals are to create mechanisms and procedures for easy access to laboratory facilities. We also aim to integrate the training and mobility networks of our three research activities through e.g. joint summer schools and web-based discussion platforms.

Lastly, we hope to take over and continue existing databases (e.g. geochemistry) as well as create these where none exists so far (e.g. rock physics). Our overall mission is to collate and provide information on fundamental properties and processes that are essential for the interpretation of large-scale geological phenomena.
