Instituto Superior Tecnico (IST; www.ist.utl.pt), part of the Technical University of Lisbon, is the leading school of engineering in Portugal. IST hosts several research units, among which ICIST (66 PhD’s, Natural Hazards, Land Use Planning and Geomatics among others). IST will participate in the EPOS Consortium on behalf of the National Geophysics Network (RNG), currently being created by the Portuguese Ministry of Science. RNG has as its central goal the operation of an open network to share information among national laboratories and university research units, in the field of geophysical monitoring. RNG is recognized by the Portuguese Research Foundation FCT and its members are: Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade do Porto (FCUP), Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (FEUP), Fundacao da Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa (FFCUL), Instituto de Meteorologia (IM), Instituto Superior Tecnico (IST), Universidade dos Açores (UAc) and Universidade de Evora (UEvora). The Portuguese EPOS team also includes Instituto Dom Luis (IDL), Instituto Geofisico da Universidade do Porto (IGUP), Centro Geofisico da Universidade de Coimbra (CGUC), Universidade do Algarve (UAlg), and the National Laboratory for Civil Engineering (LNEC).
In order to reach strong consensus at national level, consultation of all national stakeholders and in particular the above mentioned legal entities will be ensured, in particular by active participation of their representatives in EPOS meetings and workshops. However resources (and personnel costs) necessary to the different work packages are directly committed by the beneficiary only (IST) and not by any of these entities which are third parties to the project.
Contribution to the PP.
IST will participate in WP5 activities with a view to creating synergies, providing a link with national initiatives in Portugal (Task 5.1), and promoting the integration of the Portuguese scientific community (Task 5.2). IST will also contribute to the identification of critical missing components or technologies in the Portuguese implementation and in the European integrated infrastructure coverage (T5.6), with particular attention to the links to other European initiatives in which Portugal participates, such as EMSO and GMES.
IST will participate in WP6 activities, contributing to a comprehensive review of existing national data infrastructures (Task 6.1) and the integration of national data providers (Task 6.2). Based on current work on in situ data retrieval from remote stations to observatories (FP7 project MIAVITA, WP6), IST will contribute to the discussion of an integrated solution to the data transmission effort and associated challenges. IST will participate in Working Groups WG1 (seismological data; F. Carrilho, J. Fonseca), WG2 (Volcano Observatory data; Dr T. Ferreira), WG3 (Geological and Surface Dynamics data; Dr J. Cabral), WG4 (Geodetic data; Dr L. Bastos) and WG7 (e-infrastructure; Dr A. Amorim).
Principal personnel involved.
Joao Fonseca (IST), the contact person for project EPOS, holds a PhD in Geophysics Durham Univ., UK), and is a member of the Board of Directors of ORFEUS. His main research interests are: geophysical instrumentation, seismology, volcanic risk.
