GSI
The Geological Survey of Ireland (GSI) is the National Earth Science Agency. It is a division of the Department (Ministry) of Communications, Energy & Natural Resources (DCENR). GSI acts as a data repository, knowledge centre and a conduit for funding DCENR Earth science projects. GSI is as an umbrella organisation of the six Irish organisations (GSI, Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS), University College Dublin (UCD), National University of Ireland Galway (NUIG), University College Cork (UCC) & the Marine Institute (MI, the National Government agency responsible for Marine Research, Technology Development and Innovation (RTDI)). Nevertheless, GSI will be the beneficiary within EPOS, in terms of work programme delivery and the conditions of the FP7 grant agreement.
Contribution to the PP.
The GSI will participate in WP5, WP6 and WP8.
WP5: Contributions to integrating & building EPOS distributed infrastructures; Planning of high quality services to users & contributions to development of EPOS training programmes & workshops, Task 5.1, 5.5.
WP6: Contributions to the development of the best distributed infrastructure architecture, common standards and facilitate access to modeling tools, Task 6.3.
WP8: Contribution to dissemination activities Task 8.3.
Principal personnel involved.
Dr Brian McConnell is a senior staff member (geologist) of the GSI’s Bedrock Mapping Programme/Section. The section has responsibility for terrestrial database management & distribution and will contribute to areas of service provision within EPOS.
Senior researcher 1 skilled in the development and application of seismic imaging methods, waveform tomography with surface and body waves, seismic anisotropy; Structure of lithosphere & upper mantle. This researcher will contribute to integrating & building EPOS distributed infrastructures, facilitate access to common standards & modeling tools and contribute to EPOS workshops.
Senior researcher 2 skilled in computational Seismology & discrete schemes for wave propagation modelling, Volcano-seismology. Management roles include co-ordination of, and partner in, several FP5 and FP6 projects. This researcher will contribute to EPOS training programmes & workshop development, the development of the best distributed infrastructure architecture and facilitate access to modeling tools
