National Projects and Initiatives
The integration of the national solid Earth science communities is a priority within the Preparatory Phase as they will be the backbone of the EPOS enterprise
EPOS has been designed to be inclusive at both geographical and disciplinary level and to reinforce the solid Earth science community in Europe and in every single country. However, to be visible at the European level, the community needs to be rooted on solid national grounds, and EPOS offers the momentum for national communities to work towards more integration.
In order to reach those goals, EPOS promotes the creation of comprehensive national and regional consortia as well as the organization of collective actions to secure national funding. National integration is indeed fundamental to the leverage effect needed to get national funding.
Moreover, the national solid Earth RIs need to be included into the national roadmaps, setting the national priorities under the ESFRI template (link). Not only does this contribute to reinforce their visibility but it is also a recognition of the support of the national authorities (or in some cases funding agencies) preparing the document. Being listed in the National roadmap might therefore help to get funded.
At the moment, the 18 national situations are very scattered and whereas some national communities are very well organized and succeeded in securing national support, others are still very loose. EPOS fosters experience sharing and exchange of good practices among the national initiatives to develop and improve each national component of the global project.
EPOS is also being enforced through regional initiatives where countries have decided to join efforts as in Scandinavia.
In this page you can find some information on initiatives to enforce EPOS at national and regional level. A pdf version is also available.
